DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS:

Eric Debarbieux is a Ph.D. in philosophy, a science education professor at the University of Bordeaux and a director of the International Centre for School Violence. He has worked in education for children and adolescents in need. He has done numerous researches in Europe, South America and Africa on violence in schools.
In this book he deals with the prevalent theme of his work, school violence, from the following perspectives: manipulation, measured violence, habitual violence, and understanding and combating violence. The last two chapters of his book refer to specific cases: the French case and the case of International Centre.

REVIEWER’S COMMENTS ON THE DOCUMENT:

Treating a theme which has become in recent years, a global concern, the book by Eric Debarbieux distances itself from the approaches that exaggerate the problem or deny it. Moreover, he proposes a broad definition of violence, including habitual violence, and not only the more extreme instances of violence. Whilst combating the political use of term, places importance in identifying the causes that lead to such acts of aggression and on potential solutions. The volume is based on considerable research and field work conducted in academic institutions from Europe, South America or Africa for some years. The comparisons made often lead to surprising conclusions. Another feature of this book is its multidisciplinary nature. It combines science education with sociology, ethnography and philosophical reflections. Although addressed primarily to specialists in the field of educational science, teachers and social workers, this paper is also addressed to the general public because of the comprehensive way in which this subject is adressed.
