DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS:

This document provides a partial charting of the rich and fertile dialogue, developed within the framework of the Special Committee Study Group of school violence (EEMOEB), established by the National Commission for human rights (EEΔA). The violent behaviours between minors have such qualitative and quantitative characteristics, that justify the occupation of the public opinion in our country in recent years. However, special attention is needed to avoid ' demonization ' of children and adolescents.

It is worth focusing then on the proposals on issues concerning education, training and support for teachers, the general functioning and organization of schools in order to prevent and handle incidents school violence, the relationship between schools and families of pupils and other activities outside of school.
In this work, after the introductory remarks of the president of the National Commission for human rights (EEΔA) Mr Papaioannou, the president of the Special Committee Study Group of school violence (EEMOEB) Mrs Giotopoulou, and the vice-president Mrs Spinelli, there are some suggestions listed, regarding “school pupil groups abuse”, “violence in schools of Athens” , “the school violence and bullying in elementary schools”, “the problem of violence and aggression in a school of Athens”, “the prevention and treatment of aggression in school”, “the school violence”), “the peer violence prevention programmes in school by KETHEA” (Therapy Centre for Dependent Individuals), “the genesis of violent and aggressive behaviour in childhood and teenage years”, “ the victimisation of children by children in schools”, “the possibilities to tackle organised school violence-bullying” and “the “good practices” in European countries to combat school violence”.

REVIEWER’S COMMENTS ON THE DOCUMENT:

This book highlights the need of combating the probem of school violence. The redaction was made by the Special Committee Study Group of school violence (EEMOEB), realizing an initiative of the National Commission for human rights (EEΔA).

This special committee (EEMOEB) was set up in 2006, in response to the tragic incident of disappearance of Alex in Veria (in northern Greece), in order to capture, study and analyze the phenomenon of school violence. The volume presented at an event open to teachers in the country, is a combination of empirical and scientific study of this phenomenon and is a useful tool for all operators of the educational community.

This version includes concrete proposals on issues concerning education, training and support for teachers, the general functioning and organisation of schools to prevent and manage incidents of school violence, the linking of schools with the families of pupils, but also other actions outside school. Some of the actions developed within the schools, was the creation of groups of friendship and the use of language and culture of foreign pupils in order to bridge the gap between them and the domestic students.

The main part of this volume is built on four axes. The first axis refers to the phenomenology of school aggression, citing the results of national and transnational investigations. The second axis includes suggestions coming from educational experiences about managing incidents of violence at school. The third axis of volume is the theoretical background of the issues examined in the work of the Commission and the fourth axis presents the Greek educational legislation and ' good practices ' applied in some representative European countries.

Finally, it’s worth mentioning that, since the purpose of the Special Committee Study Group of school violence (EEMOEB) is to support teachers in the correct address of school violence, this book has been distributed free of charge to the organizations of education for their members.
