DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS:

This report from the Centre for Children and Youth Crime Prevention (Arbeitsstelle für Kinder- und Jugendkriminalprävention) basically focuses on specific strategies to prevent violence in childhood and adolescence. The first objective is to sight and report the current state of professional practice in this area and to name political and technical challenges and intervention approaches that go along with the phenomenon of youth violence.
The report mainly focuses on the most important places of growth of children and young people and on the competent institutions in case of violence in childhood and adolescence.
In this context can be mentioned: the family, the pre-school activities of child day care, school, the children and youth services, the police and the judiciary.
This report arose from the decision of the Ministerial Conference of the countries on 26 July 2003 because it was agreed that the overall social alliance for the outlawing of violence and glorification of violence (Allianz zur Ächtung von Gewalt und Gewaltverherrlichung) should be more supported on a political level.
The report consists of six reviews that give an overview of the state of violence prevention in the areas of family, child day care, school, child and youth services, police and judiciary.
The report should be viewed as an interim balance sheet, as of course there is still improvement expected in the current situation, and it is hoped that current and new approaches continue to bring positive results. Therefore, the report mainly aims to document the advances in the prevention of violence in childhood and adolescence and to identify discernible political challenges. In addition to the previously mentioned areas of activity, the topic of media and especially the area of child and youth protection are getting more important in current discussions on violence prevention and should be also addressed in this report. Finally there are also treated cross-cutting issues such as juvenile violence and masculinity and juvenile violence and migration experience.
