DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS:

This short research briefing was written in February 2010 and gives clear definitions of bullying and types of bullying. The report is split into short sections e.g. How common is bullying in schools; How common are the different types of bullying; Age and gender differences in bullying; Characteristics of bullies; Characteristics of victims; Characteristics of bully/victims; Participant roles in school bullying; Reporting of bullying (only about 50% of victims report the bullying); School Bullying Policies and Anti-bullying interventions.

The report then ends with a brief conclusion, brief practice points and brief policy recommendations.

REVIEWER’S COMMENTS ON THE DOCUMENT:

This briefing has some interesting Key Findings e.g. large scale surveys of bullying around the world report victimisation rates of between 9% and 32%, and bullying rates of between 3% and 27% (Stassen Berger 2007); Verbal abuse is the most commonly reported type of bullying; Bullying is a group process - it normally happens in front of other children; Many victims of bullying do not report it to a teacher, but of those who do, some may help but others make no difference or even make the bullying worse; Family and peer relationships have been identified as important factors for bullies as well as victims and 'bully/victims' (those who bully and are also bullied themselves)

There is a lengthy, potentially useful reference section at the end of the report but we felt this section was out of proportion to the report itself (The actual report is 14 pages long and the reference section is 7 pages long)

However in general we found the briefing to be too superficial and we believe there are better anti-bullying resources - research reports, web sites etc available elsewhere.
