DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS:

This brochure is a practical aid specifically designed for teachers. The combination of theoretical contents on the phenomenon of bullying with the presentation of concrete possibilities for action and obligations shall support the persons in charge to deal with the problem of bullying preventively. The brochure shall illustrate that active intervention is indispensable in incidents related to bullying, because research has shown that bullying has serious consequences - both for victims and perpetrators. Because bullying often emerges in the school context, especially the commitment of teachers is required. Unfortunately, they often underestimate the real extent of bullying and above all, affected students rarely contact teachers or parents if they have any problems. However, if teachers can recognize evidences for bullying, they will be able to develop solution strategies together with parents of those affected.
This brochure intends to give teachers knowledge so that they get confident to competently deal with bullying situations. First, the booklet begins with a theoretical part that gives information about what bullying actually is, what forms it can take, the consequences it can have for those involved and how it arises. The subsequent section looks at the legal basis for actions by teachers in the case of bullying. Finally short-and long-term policy options are presented for teachers, so that, after reading this handout they are able to recognize bullying and to safely handle it.

REVIEWER’S COMMENTS ON THE DOCUMENT:

We chose this brochure because it provides not only theoretical contents on the phenomenon of bullying but it also stresses possibilities and obligations on how to act with bullying, which should especially help teachers to get competence in the handling of bullying situations. Moreover, legal aspects are highlighted – what teachers have to do in case of bullying, what they are allowed to do and what they are not allowed to do. So with this booklet, especially teachers can get a broad overview of the topic “bullying” and of how to deal with it.
