DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS:

This report presents collected publications and research projects of the last five years on the issue of violence in school. To narrow the wealth of publications, the focus mainly lies on those that are related to the crime scene school.
The first chapter provides a realistic inventory of the previous violence situation. It makes statements on the extent and spread of violence and tries to answer the question to one can talk of an increase of violence in schools. The phenomenon of violence is dealt comprehensively, from verbal aggression to sexual and physical violence.
The second chapter is about the phenomenology of violence in school. Chapter 3 mainly deals with the causes and conditions of violence in school. Investigations in this case relate to psychological difficulties of the perpetrator, as well as difficulties at home and school problems, the role of groups and gangs, and also to aspects of the education system and the school system. The influence of the Media is not focused in this report but only mentioned in passing. The fourth chapter discusses the methodology for the diagnosis of violence, and methods of intervention and prevention, their conditions, possibilities and limitations. It also deals with the question whether there is any realistic chance to curb violence in schools. The fifth chapter deals with the question of attitudes to violence and violent criminals. It is also about the general perception of violence and about the comparison of perception and the actual experience or rather the actual levels of violence. The sixth and final chapter contains all publications and research findings that are difficult to relate to any of the other chapters or - as the case may be – that are covering several topics at once.

REVIEWER’S COMMENTS ON THE DOCUMENT:

We decided to select this report, because its main focus is on violence in schools and it gives a broad overview of publications and research made so far. Furthermore the report deals with many aspects of the phenomenon of violence and provides information on the extent and spread of violence in Germany. This report is especially useful because it not only describes the phenomenon of violence, but it also deals with the methodology for the diagnosis of violence and with conditions, possibilities and limitations of intervention and prevention.
