DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS:

The KIM-study is a study series that is regularly published by the Media Education Research Association Southwest (Medienpädagogischer Forschungsverbund Südwest). It is sponsored by the State Institute of Communications Baden-Württemberg (Landesanstalt für Kommunikation Baden-Württemberg - LFK) and the State Media Authority of Rhineland-Palatinate (Landeszentrale für Medien und Kommunikation Rheinland-Pfalz -LMK).The implementation of the KIM study was carried out in cooperation with SWR Media Research. To get a better understanding of the situation of our children, it is absolutely necessary to deal with the topic “children and media”. Especially in these days, as the media plays an important role in both children’s leisure time as well as in school. In school, for example you can find media influences in form of the use of educational software and computer use for homework management; at leisure children frequently use MP3-players, communicate with friends via chat or SMS or use the television or radio. The exact usage behavior of children, which activities are made at what age and how often, was regularly examined in the KIM study (children and the media) since 1999. Precisely because of the increase in media use, it is more and more important to continuously capture the current situation in children's environment. An important aspect in this context is the extent to which parents and teachers recognize the current developments and actively monitor the media socialization of their children. The KIM-study covers the entire media's handling of children, i.e. television, radio, MP3, reading, computer, Internet and mobile phone. In addition, subjects' interests, leisure, media attachment and role models are being requested. The peculiarity of the KIM-study is that the main educators, that are mostly the mothers, are also being questioned. So it is possible to get, in addition to the information from the children themselves about their media use, also information about the media behavior of the main educators and their general attitudes towards media.

REVIEWER’S COMMENTS ON THE DOCUMENT:

We selected the KIM study because it is very important to know about children’s media behavior. In our society, the media plays a very important role and its influence on people, especially children, should not be underestimated. It is important for us to know how the media influences our children’s lives and what kinds of media are currently used by them. The peculiarity is that the KIM-study regularly examines children’s media behavior so it is possible to see how things change over time, how some mediums are getting more important while others are being more and more neglected. It is important for us to have a closer look at the connection between media usage and the spread of violent actions, and for that, the KIM-study offers a very good foundation.
