DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS:

The book "Schulgewalt, Bullying und Internet. Das Internet als Hilfsmedium für die Schulgewalt- und Bullyingproblematik“ by Christian Weber and Björn Bedey addresses the problem area of school violence and bullying, which is still a current and very important issue. Latest studies have shown that about 11% of all interrogated students in Europe are affected by regular violence experiences. Regarding irregular attacks, the figures are even larger. Not only the acts themselves, but also the physical and mental consequences can be severe and potentially lead to depression or even suicide.
The necessary knowledge for interventions and prevention exists already, but only in theory; it is now increasingly important that the results of research will be utilized by entering the public domain and by getting implemented in practice. The Internet with its wide potential plays an intermediary role in this context. Almost half of all Europeans are online and numbers are still increasing.
There are many possibilities to get information, to communicate and to publish news.
This book is based on an exploratory online survey. The main goal was to open the research field and create a further hypothesis. The initial hypothesis was: “The Internet offers a wide potential and different application possibilities for the field of school violence and bullying issues, and is already used in this context.” This hypothesis could be confirmed by the study and was further analyzed.
First of all the authors describe the structure and the aims of their work. Afterwards follows a detailed discussion on the topic of school violence and bullying, including the current situation, frequencies and causes. The subsequent chapter focuses on the topic of the Internet, its historical aspects, the different Internet services available and there is also a discussion on the possibilities and limitations of the Internet. Finally the authors talk about the issues and objectives of their survey, they describe the implementation as well as the data analysis and their findings.

REVIEWER’S COMMENTS ON THE DOCUMENT:

We chose this book "Schulgewalt, Bullying und Internet. Das Internet als Hilfsmedium für die Schulgewalt- und Bullyingproblematik“ by Christian Weber and Björn Bedey because it deals with a topic that is currently very important in our society: the problem of school violence and bullying. Especially the authors’ focus on the Internet makes this book quite interesting because they try to show the potential the Internet offers and how it can be used to inform and explain about the problem of bullying and about intervention and prevention possibilities.
