DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS:

This is a short pamphlet which gives brief details of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Programme (OBPP). The OBPP is not a
curriculum, but a program that deals with bullying at the
schoolwide, classroom, individual, and community levels.

The pamphlet gives details of what happens at each of the four levels e.g.

Schoolwide - teachers and support staff receive training; a schoolwide committee is set up to oversee the programme; students complete a questionaire (see sample attached below); areas most at risk for bullying to take place are identified and monitored; Parent meetings and parent and student meetings take place; all students follow four anti-bullying rules:

1) We will not bully others
2) We will try to help students who are bulied
3) We will try to include students who are left out
4) If we know that somebody is being bullied, we will tell an
adult at school andf an adult at home

Classroom - the four anti-bullying rules are taught; classroom meetings are held; teachers use positive and negative consequences for following and not following the four anti-bullying rules

Individuals who bully or who are bullied - teachers are trained to deal with bullying situations; students who bully are given consequences as soon as possible; students being bullied are supported by staff; teachers meet with the parents of students who bully and who are bullied.

Community - the school looks for ways to develop anti-bullying partnerships to take the inti-bullying message across the whole community

There are also useful sections for parents on how to identify if their child is being bullied (with 12 points to watch for) and what parents can do if they think their child is being bullied, if they think their child is bullying others or even if their child isn't involved - they can still have a part to play in stopping bullying.

REVIEWER’S COMMENTS ON THE DOCUMENT:

There are a great many sources of information on the internet about the Olweus Bullying Prevention Programme but most of them do not seem to give details of how the programme works, probably because access to the programme is not available for free. However many of the resources we have researched recommend the programme as one of the best researched and successful anti-bullying schemes available and this is the reason we wanted to include this reference to encourage further investigation into the programme.

This leaflet gives a very useful flavour of what the programme entails.
