Initially the phenomenon of school bullying is defined and the increasing appearance of it is stressed out. Research regarding school bullying in Greece a glorious level has not been achieved yet. There is no evidence supporting strictly scientific conclusions, several tendencies have been described so far though. Next part presents the results of a survey conducted by the Ministry of Education of Greece the school years 2004-05 and 2005-06. The participants totaled 4000 students, of 6th, 9th and 10th grade, plus 200 teachers. According to the results half students recognize the forms school bullying might take, while around 10% have been victims of the phenomenon in school rooms, which are not supervised. There also follows a description of the victim’s and victor’s characteristics.
The victim becomes then the center of the analysis. The victim feels fear and often becomes offensive proving true the saying “Violence generates violence”. Parents shall behave to the child on a manner, which will comfort it to confess the problem, when there is suspicion a problem exists and work on solving the problem using all official ways right after. Moreover, they shall keep in mind, that the social service of the municipality or other organizations employing specialists could be of much help. Practically they shall advice their child to be careful when dealing with strangers and speak out their opinions. Registering the child on group activities will increase its’ self-confidence. Trying to reach out for the parents of victors, the writer does strictly recommend dialogue over punishment of the victors. Parents should focus on explaining to their child what is wrong about victimizing others. They should essentially inform the school over any incident they are aware of, parallel to praising positive behaviors of the victors.
Concluding, the writer states that Greek school units are not yet well-prepared to face the phenomenon individually. The solution can only be brought through the formation of a national policy, provided that there will be good faith and cooperation from all parts involved in any way at the raising and education of children.
