DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS:

The anthology "Gewaltprävention in der Schule" compiled by the editors Wolfgang Melzer and Hans-Dieter Schwind provides an overview of the progress of violence prevention in schools. It shows what basic information should be considered, which practical models are possible and helpful and the prospects for an effective, successful violence prevention. The book itself is divided into three main areas, namely basics, practical models and perspectives. The first part of this anthology gives an insight into the phenomena and principles of violence in schools and it also clarifies the importance of a thorough analysis before the implementation of prevention into practice. In the main part are then presented 15 models of practice, with special emphasis on prevention programs specifically for teaching, mediation in schools and intervention and support for schools. In this main part, especially peer mediation programs are considered, as well as models of cooperation such as school social work, film initiatives or special advisory teams. At any point within the main part, there is additional information about the featured programs. The last major part of the book deals with the future prospects of violence prevention and it also shows the importance of gender-specific, multimodal prevention. The contents of this book are both valuable for practitioners in child and youth services and teachers but also for decision makers in the institutions and political bodies. The collection is particularly clear, taking facts into account, relevant to practice, scientifically funded and highly diverse so that the different practice and research fields are illuminated from all sides.

REVIEWER’S COMMENTS ON THE DOCUMENT:

We chose the anthology "Gewaltprävention in der Schule" compiled by the editors Wolfgang Melzer and Hans-Dieter Schwind because it clearly shows the progress of violence prevention programs initiated in schools. In addition to basic information about the phenomenon of violence in schools, the book also offers an insight into the different models of practice that have already been applied in schools. The book is especially useful because of its clarity and its relevancy to practice. It takes lots of facts into account, it is scientifically funded and highly diverse so that the reader can get a broad overview of the topic. Moreover, the book does not only focus on the subject of violence but also deals with other important areas in this context, such as health, school achievement, employment market, recreational activities, poverty and migration.
