“Safer Internet” is a programme of the European Commission (EC) Information Society and Media Directorate-General which has been implemented since 1999 in most EU countries. In 2005, the programme was started in Lithuania by the company Bitė Lietuva, the Ministry of Education and Science, and Social and Psychological Service Centre which won the tender announced by the EC.
The objective of the programme – to call the society’s attention to information of illegal and harmful content on the internet related to violations such as pornography, paedophilia, racism, and xenophobia envisaged by Lithuanian law . Particular attention is being attached to protection of children and adolescents from the harmful content of the internet.
Based on the programme of the EC Information Society and Media Directorate-General, the project "Safer Internet LT AN-HL" is being implemented in Lithuania in 2009–2010. The main tasks of this project are the following:
- Education of the society on the issues of a safe internet (being implemented by CITE and RRT).
- Hotline operation (being operated by RRT). Currently you can click on the link http://www.draugiskasinternetas.lt/en/main/reports and report about illegal information you have noticed. This information is then filtered and communicated to the responsible institutions. At the present 38 hotlines are working in 33 countries (mostly in EU) which have joined the INHOPE Association http://www.inhope.org . The hotline of RRT became a member of INHOPE during General Assembly of INHOPE on 28-29 May 2008.
