The Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre is dedicated to eradicating the sexual abuse of children. That means they are part of UK policing and very much about tracking and bringing offenders to account either directly or in partnership with local and international forces.
CEOP have produced the Thinkuknow web site for children aged 5-7yrs, 8-10yrs and 11-16yrs as well as parents/carers and teachers/trainers. The site provides the latest information on the sites children like to visit, mobiles and new technology. Advice is given about what's good, what's not good and what can be done about it.
There are resources for use at home or in the classroom, games for young to play showing how predators can make contact and there is also an area to report if the young person feels uncomfortable or worried about someone they are chatting to online.
An excellent site giving advice to young people on all types of potential threats from - cyberbullying; social networking sites; sexting; mobile phones; chatrooms; uploading videos; gaming; pro-eating disorder sites; child trafficking; hacking and viruses.
Guidance for parents and carers is also very good, with internet safety tips; how to support children to use the internet safely; a link (under Further Support) to the Internet Watch Foundation - this is the 'hotline' for the public to report potentially illegal content online. More specifically they deal with child sexual abuse content hosted worldwide, and criminally obscene and incitement to racial hatred content hosted in the UK.
The teachers and trainers area has a wide variety of resources such as videos and posters as well as formal training opportunities - we particularly recommend the CEOP Ambassador training course - but beware these courses are quickly booked up.
