DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS:

The scope of this article is to present the results of the most recent meta-analyses and reviews regarding the effectiveness of prevention and intervention of programs towards the school bullying phenomenon. It refers to the research plans with which the effectiveness of the programs has been evaluated, as well as to the ways of evaluating bullying and victimization in these programs. Taking into account the minimum to medium success of most interventions, suggestions are made in order to explain the small and limited effectiveness. In order to formulate an anti-bullying politic in Greece, we first need to know the principles, the ingredients and the levels of intervention that lead to the bigger decrease of school bullying, that have to be research validated. The article starts with the definition of school bullying phenomenon, its forms and continues with the programs’ evaluation effectiveness. It underlines that measurements, before and after the projects’ implementation, usually include the following: a) bullying and victimization self- reports from children themselves, b) bullying and victimization reports from peers, teachers and parents, c) self- reports of various adjustment and psychological health aspects, d) self- reports and reports from others regarding the school violence in general and e) generic evaluation of social and synergetic mood learnt at school and of school itself. In addition, it mentions that intervention programs usually last one or two years and are addressed to various levels, such as: level of society, of family, of school, of classroom, of peer group and personal level (children and teenagers). Many useful information regarding programs’ effectiveness in general and partial can be generated from the relative meta-analyses. Moreover, the article refers to the causes that limit the programs’ effectiveness and describes the situation in Greece nowadays.

REVIEWER’S COMMENTS ON THE DOCUMENT:

This article was chosen as it summarizes the most recent researches and meta-analyses regarding school bullying. It is very important to have, in one article, the results of the most important meta-analyses, the methods that were followed and their effectiveness. The current article, could be a useful tool for anyone who desires to conduct a relevant research in Greece (where only few researches have been conducted), in order to follow success practices (if they exist) and avoid possible mistakes of former researches. It is also significant that it refers to the research plans with which the effectiveness of the programs has been evaluated, as well as to the ways of evaluating bullying and victimization in these programs. Taking into account the minimum to medium success of most interventions, suggestions are made in order to explain the small and limited effectiveness. Furthermore, it is important that the article starts with the definition of school bullying phenomenon and its forms, in order to make an introduction to the phenomenon and continues with the programs’ evaluation effectiveness.
