DESCRIPTION OF THE GOOD PRACTICE:

The topic of the project is provoked by the growing violence among children and the frequent cases of aggression in Bulgarian schools, which turn into a problem that can grow substantially. For the students the most important element of the social environment is the peer group in and out of the school. Because of this the main reason for child aggression should be sought in the interpersonal relations of the youths, as well as in the type of social norms adopted by the informal groups.
The aim of the project is, by means of training and empowerment of informal leaders among the students and their inclusion in the forms of student self-government, to create conditions for prevention of aggression and the manifestations of violence at school.
The participants in the project will have opportunity to apply in practice the acquired new skills and competences through their participation in different forms of student self-government, keeping the order and the discipline at school.
The idea is for the trained leaders to form groups “I chose – without violence!” in the respective schools, which to initiate activities connected with the keeping of order and discipline at school and curbing the cases of aggression and violence on behalf of the students.

RESULTS:

In relation with the project activities, 20 children from different schools in Smolyan have been trained for development of communication skills and curbing aggression, through work with a psychologist and teachers as well as through joining sports activities. A children martial arts sport club has been formed at the regional department of the Ministry of internal affairs, which has already conducted one training course with the children and youths in the project.

INDICATORS:

Help-line/counseling, Cooperative group work, Peer support.

EVALUATION:

A useful practice for students’ empowerment and development of skills for independent dealing with different negative situations of violence and harassment at school on behalf of students themselves.
Peer learning between students combined with the provision of advice and support both from within the group, as well as from the outside – from experts – is extremely useful.
