DESCRIPTION OF THE GOOD PRACTICE:

This is a transnational European programme implemented in schools of Athens and Thessaloniki, with the aim of the study, prevention and tackling of bullying and school violence. The scientific team that had the responsibility of the program came into contact with many schools of Athens and finally chose 4 of them for the pilot implementation. The degree of occurrence of the problem of bullying in the chosen schools was recorded, as also the attitudes, perceptions and understanding of the problem of the involved groups (students, teachers, parents), with analysis of quantitative and qualitative data. Subsequently a psycho-educational intervention program developed and pilot applied in 2 of the chosen schools for pupils' awareness of 5th and 6th class of the primary school (with 4 sessions in the classroom),for the teachers of the schools (with 3 sessions at school) and for the parents (1 meeting at school). The results of the pilot programme were evaluated with a comparative assessment of the degree of occurrence of the problem, of the knowledge, the attitudes and perceptions of pupils and parents in the schools that the intervention was carried out (before and after the intervention), but also in relation to the other 2 in which there was no intervention carried out.

RESULTS:

By analysing the results of the programme it was found that the problem of bullying is a real and important one of school life in the schools of Athens, which participated in the program. The majority of children help or wish to help the victim, but prefer not to disclose the problem in adults (parents, teachers), for whom they believe that are intervening only in few cases. Conversely, the majority of teachers believe that they intervene in most cases and can deal with the phenomena of school violence, while the vast majority of them indicate the necessity for appropriate training for dealing with the problem. Therefore, they request to be included in the training of teachers, issues which are related with ways of discussing with the aggressors, victims, and students who attending incidents of intimidation, as also bullying prevention and intervention activities with pupils at school and in cooperation with their parents.

INDICATORS:

Detection protocol, Intervention protocol, Parent training/meetings, Teacher training.

EVALUATION:

At the end of the presentation of the implementation of the transnational programme to combat school-based violence and bullying it is stressed the need for training of teachers so as they be able to identify and manage the problem. At the same time it is stressed the necessity for a constant encouragement and support of parents for active participation and cooperation with the school. The results of the action implement the need for employing experts of mental health of children and adolescents in schools, who will be involved in school’s everyday life. pages
