The text deals with “how” to become mediators in everyday life and at work and “why” mediation is essential to solve everyday conflicts. In the mediation the challenge to reach a mutual agreement and to be satisfied is essential: this mutual satisfaction is the key element that distinguishes mediation from compromise. Thanks to mediation the parties obtain something, with the compromise they give something. Here are 10 + good reasons to adopt mediation:
1. Mediation awakens the responsibility of the subjects involved: they are free to mediate and are the main characters of mediation because they decide how and whether to reach an agreement;
2. Mediation aims at reaching an agreement: the mediator as an impartial third person helps the parties to find an agreement that meets their requirements fulfilling the motto win to win;
3. Mediation focuses on a long-lasting relationship among the parties: the parties cooperate to find out an agreement and when they reach it they may maintain this relationship in the future.
4. Mediation enables the subjects to express their creativity: the mediator helps the parties in the brainstorming phase to make them change their point of view and to work out as many solutions as possible to solve their problems.
5. Mediation does not consider only what is negotiated;
6. Mediation can be different according to various situations: the object of the dispute does not play a key role, what is important is the real interests and needs of the parties
7. In Mediation all negotiation strategies are applied: there is an assisted negotiation.
8. Mediation is a very accurate process: it is regulated by the pre-established rules issued by the mediation organization.
9. Mediation is a reserved process
10. Mediation is a very efficient process because it saves time and money
10 + The fairness and professionalism of the mediator can make the difference
This text can be interesting to teach children / students to cope with the own conflicts fairly and cheerfully.
Facing a dispute is not easy at all: the best way lies in the application of mediation strategies. Thanks to this book it is possible to find out how to teach students these communication skills and to make them autonomous in the solution of conflicts among peers.
