DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS:

Bullying is considered a danger for our society and it works considerably against the social and economical development and enhances aggressiveness and criminality. A modern country cannot and must not put up with that. Bullying is a widespread social uneasiness, it is a synonym of disaffection in interpersonal relationships of adolescents and young people, but it is not linked to a specific category neither in society nor in the registry office. Bullying evolves with age, changes year by year and in adulthood we will acknowledge it in many and too many social, working and familiar misbehaviors. As for a definition, we can say that “a student is bullied when he/she is victimized and abused, when s/he is continuously subjected to offensive attitudes carried out by one or more classmates”. (Olweus 1996). A recent survey carried out in Italy about bullying in secondary schools stated that one boy out of two is victim of verbal, psychological and physical abuse, and 33% is often a victim of frequent abuse. From the outcomes of this survey, verbal and psychological abuse are more frequent than physical ones: 42% of the teenagers states that they are victims of mockery, 3,4% states they are victims of isolation, 11% states that they were victims of threats. Bullying is undervalued in our society, even if it is a true manifestation of social disaffection both for those who commit the crime and for those who are victims of it. The former may assume deviating attitudes, the latter may suffer a sort of insecure and lack of self confidence that may lead to depression.

REVIEWER’S COMMENTS ON THE DOCUMENT:

The consequences of bullying are extremely important, and sometimes they are irreparable; the damage to the self-esteem of the victim remains throughout the years and the victim constantly loses confidence in the social institutions such as school and also family. Other victims may become aggressors against weaker people. Bullying is not only a problem for the victim but it goes beyond the dichotomy oppressor and oppressed because the tension among people influences the family, the school and other social institutions as well as the future of the person and of society on the whole. Let’s fight against this phenomenon for a peaceful future of young and older people which should be full of dreams.
