DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS:

This document is given to psychology students of University of Crete, instead of a book, for the lesson “Bullying and victimization”. The document starts with an historical review of the terms bullying and violence and gives also definitions about school bullying. It continues by making a distinction between conflict and bullying, it analyses the different forms of power, it distinguishes unreasonable and reasonable aggressiveness, it provides the recognition criteria that differentiate the real bullying and analyses the forms of bullying (physical, verbal, emotional, sexual, racism). Moreover, it refers to school bullying impacts to childhood, giving at the same time examples and statistical information. It also refers to bullying impacts to the psychological health of the victims. Furthermore, it presents some additional forms of bullying (apart from school bullying), such as bullying at work, bullying at home, bullying at prison, etc. It also presents the characteristics of the bullies, classifying them to three categories a) the aggressive ones, b) the passive- aggressive and c) the bullies who are ex- victims. It continues with presenting the characteristic of the victims, which classifies in two categories a) the passive victims and b) the provocative victims. It gives also the causes of school bullying and suggestions on how to handle school bullying. More specifically, it gives advice on how to react during the school bullying incidence, as well as interference suggestions to parents and children who are victims.
It is important, in this document, that apart from theory, it gives examples, as well as statistical information from studies occurred in different countries and are relevant with the school bullying phenomenon. In this way, students have the opportunity to evaluate the importance of the phenomenon and comprehend it in a better way.
The specific lesson covers a wide range of school bulling, as it includes and analyses all the relevant aspects connected to school bullying.

REVIEWER’S COMMENTS ON THE DOCUMENT:

The current document was chosen because it concerns one of the few lessons taught in universities regarding school bullying. It is educational notes of a university lesson of Psychology Department of University of Crete. Psychology is much related to the school bullying phenomenon, more specifically with its confrontation.
The particular lesson covers a wide range of school bullying phenomenon giving historical information regarding bullying growth, as well as definitions about school bullying, conflicts, aggressiveness, etc. It refers also to the various forms of power (reciprocate power, power of constraint , power of authority, legal power, power of information, etc.). It makes also a distinction between conflict and bullying, mentioning that in conflict incidents there is a equal relation between involved members, often there is a friendly relationship, it occurs randomly, it can only happen once, it does not causes important consequences to the victim, it does not aim in gaining power and often is accompanied by apology. On the other hand, in bullying incidents there is an unequal allocation of power, there is no friendly relationship, it is planned, it is repeatable, it threats seriously the physical and psychological health of the victims and the victims are accused of having provoked the bullies. Moreover, the document distinguishes reasonable and unreasonable aggressiveness, it presents the recognition criteria that differentiate the real bullying and analyses the forms of bullying.
