DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS:

The article " Cyberbullying: Jeder fünfte Schüler wird gemobbt " published on 17/11/2009 on the website of T-Online focuses on the phenomena of bullying and cyber bullying among students. At first, it is pointed out that in almost every class some children are victims of bullying, that means they are tormented or ridiculed because they seem to be different from others because of their appearance or fashion style. Nowadays, these attacks are not only carried out face-to-face, but are also mediated by new media such as mobile phones or via chat. Amongst other things, there are embarrassing photos taken and published on the Internet or there are set up special groups in social networks like Facebook or SchuelerVZ to humiliate unpopular classmates. Results of different surveys showed that users of these new media are getting younger and that these students are often unaware of the potential risks and dangers that come with the use of mobile phones, chats or social networks. A recent study conducted by the Anti-Bullying Alliance (ABA) showed that most children are very young the first time they get in contact with cyber bullying and also that one in five students has already been a victim of such bullying attacks. It was also noted that parents and the schools themselves are not aware of the risks their children are facing by using new media. Parents and schools are encouraged to take a more active role in this area and to accompany their children when using new media and to give them advice for the safe handling of the Internet and mobile phones. For victims of cyber bullying, there are already several contact points in Germany. For example, there is the “Jugendinfo” Bremen. They offer a brochure about cyber bullying on their website and also provide teaching materials for schools. The Internet portal "juuuport.de" on the other hand is a virtual information point where so-called “scouts” are available to help victims of cyber bullying.
